07/17/2006 - What's Been Going On This Year?

Mesa Caledonian has been hard at work since the merger with Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band at the beginning of the year. Lots of individual and group practices to find the right fit amongst the players, reoutfitting of uniforms and equipment and fundraising to make it all happen.

In competition, we've seen moderate success. The season started off at the Queen Mary Festival in Long Beach where we took 3rd in Grade 3 and the Marching & Deportment prize. The next weekend here in Mesa, our Grade 4 unit placed 2nd at the Arizona Scottish Gathering. We took both competition units to Pomona in May with top 5 placings under sunny California skies. Then just last month in San Diego our Grade 3 band placed 3rd again. Of particular note, Duncan Burgin and Corey Fitch were the Grade 4 and Grade 3 solo piping champions of the weekend.

The real gem of this competition season seems to be our solo competitors. A majority of our musicians compete in solo disciplines and have been cleaning up the prizes in the Western United States Pipe Band Association.

As of July 2006, Mesa Caledonian membership hold the following ranks on the Champion of Champions boards or have taken top prizes at contests:

  • Kevin MacHeffner - 1st Adult Drum Major, 2nd Professional Tenor Drum
  • Robert LeVar - 1st Juvenile Drum Major
  • Cameron Fitch - 2nd Juvenile Drum Major
  • Corey Fitch - 15th Grade 3 Solo Piping (out of 34!)
  • Duncan Burgin - Grade 4 Solo Piping
  • Lois Kohlmeyer - Grade 4 Solo Piping
  • Kyle Reich - 1st Grade 3 Solo Snare Drumming
  • Adam Burke - 2nd Grade 3 Solo Snare Drumming
  • Cody Nunez - 4th Grade 3 Solo Snare Drumming
  • Caitlin Fitch - Grade 1 Solo Tenor Drumming

Pleasanton is our last contest of the year on Labor Day weekend. Wish us luck!!

01/29/2006 - Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band Joins With Mesa Caledonian

We have exciting news for then new year! The Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, formed in 1996 by past members of Mesa Caledonian had been competing quite successfully in Grade 4 over the past decade. While both bands have co-existed in Mesa for a long time, over the holidays it was decided by leadership of both bands that a marriage of opportunity was there for the taking. Both MCPB and SOS have a pool of talented players and strong organizational skills.

So on New Years Eve 2005, the new Mesa Caledonian Pipe Band debuted at the Fiesta Bowl Parade in downtown Phoenix. Marching a band of over 20 pipes, 15 side drums, a full midsection and 4 drum majors... a new chapter in pipe bands was started here in the State of Arizona!

We look forward to what 2006 brings!
